Personal Challenge for Eco-Generations
“Trash to Treasure, My Home, Tomorrow”
Sponsored by REI
The Sustainable September Eco-Generation’s personal challenge is to create a “Trash to Treasure” work of art showing how you practice sustainable living. Show us how you take care of your home and community so it’s better for kids in the future in your everyday life. Using recycled materials and found objects, create a visual representation of what the world of tomorrow will look like because of your good choices today.
Projects will be on display in the Community Resource Room at REI, located at 1125 North Monroe, from Monday, October 3-October 10 during regular store hours.*
Materials:
Raiding the recycling bin at home yields great materials for this project.
If you need materials, contact Jim at Earthworks Recycling and set up an appointment to check out all the treasures there. He can be reached at (509) 534-1638. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who will aid in selection of age-appropriate art materials. Everyone who visits the recycling center must wear closed-toed shoes.
Prizes:
Prizes provided by REI will be awarded for first, second and third place. Winners will be determined by an unbiased panel of judges and announced at the Spokane River Clean-up on Saturday, October 1.
Contest requirements:
- Project must fit in a standard photo copy paper box (17”x11”x10”)—it can be smaller
- Participants must be in middle school or younger
- Project must consist of at least 80% recycled or reused material
- Project must include a sustainable (reduce, reuse, recycle) plan for its disposal once it reaches the end of its useful life
- Project must be submitted in person with a completed entry form—attached to the project—at REI between Sunday, September 25 at 10 a.m. and Thursday, September 29 at 9 p.m.
