Wendell Berry to the rescue

Wendell who?

If you have even a smidgen of interest in economic sustainability, you need to know Wendell Berry.  A perfect combination of a poet, essayist, and farmer, Berry thinks and writes with such clarity, understatement, and vision that he leaves his readers smacking their foreheads and crying “It’s so obvious!  Why didn’t I think of that?!?”

Although I haven’t read it, Berry has a new book out that promises to address the very issues that this blog is concerned with: the stewardship of our local natural resources, preserving the dignity of our human resources, and the impact that our region’s economy has on Pacific Northwest and the rest of the globe.  The book is entitled What Matters?: Economics for a Renewed Commonwealth. The Spokane Public Library has several copies available: http://bit.ly/dtlmL1

And yes, recommending a book before having a chance to read it is generally frowned upon in the public library world, but using the tactic sparingly can also be the ultimate stamp of approval.  This is one such case.
